I know I may sound like one of those people who insist that the mono versions of Beatles recordings are more “authentic” than their stereo counterparts, but… while this is not true of every song on the White Album, the mono mix of “Yer Blues” packs a punch that is relatively lacking in the stereo. It sounds more like that little room they played in.

The title “yer blues” isn’t merely a colloquial variant of “your blues” but is a truncated version of a sentence which would be something like: “here’s yer bloody blues for yer!” i.e. “you make such a fuss about the blues so here’s my/our take on it, (along with, by the way, much heavier lyrics than any conventional blues song).”

Funny… I was listening to this, and noting the cut-off at 3:16. I was actually thinking, “what a tight & tidy, abrupt stop by the band”, not realizing it was a tape splice.
Almost sad to find this out, after all this time.

Yer blues – was recorded in 17 takes in August 1968 at Abbey Road _”Studio Two” first session August 13-14 and second session in “Studio Three” August 20 where the stereo mix was completed – Paul played his fender jazz bass – John played is Epiphone Casino – George his Gibson Les Paul “Lucy” and Ringo on his Ludwig. John and George each played a solo. Ken Scott the sound engineer used an RCA 44-BX mic to record John’s vocals, a microphone generally used for percussion.

After George Martin did his “final” album where he had different people singing Beatles songs (Phil Collins, Jim Carrey, etc.), he said if Jimi Hendrix had been on it, he would have had him do “Yer Blues”. I was never a fan of Hendrix particularly, but that would have been something to hear!

This is definitely an underrated song in my opinion. It’s not among my favorite songs by the Beatles or on the White Album, but I still think it’s a fantastic song either way. Does anyone know who plays which guitar part? I’m not talking about the solos. I got the impression that the first solo is John and the second one is George. However, what about the riffs? Who plays which part for the riffs during the verses?

It’s actually more of an approximation of London Cockney speech…there was a TV character called Alf Garnett at the time, a working – class Londoner who would rant derisively about “yer bloody Labour Party” or launch racist tirades against “yer coons”, etc. I think John Lennon was hiding behind his self-conscious insecurity about white men trying to play authentically black music here, especially as the words “Yer Blues” do not actually appear anywhere in the lyrics…

Whilst working out ” Goodbye”, Paul`s song for Mary Hopkins, on the guitar, I realised that the intro guitar riff on “Goodbye” is the same as the guitar riff on “Yer Blues” that starts just before the lyrics ..”girl, you know the reason why.”

Fantastic vocals by John Lennon and musicianship by all the Beatles. As pointed out in the editorial, Lennon was heading towards “Cold Turkey” and the “Plastic Ono Band” album with this song. One of my favorites on “The White Album”, this song just has to be played loud!!

The greatest version of this song was on “Live Peace in Toronto”. The Rock and Roll Circus version was tepid by comparison. In Toronto, Lennon and Clapton’s solos were fantastic, especially Clapton’s. His solo on the “Circus” version wasn’t even close to as good. In Toronto, he anticipates his turn and comes out totally blazing, then throws down a blistering run to wrap it up.

You can see the performance on youtube, but that version has more of Yoko wailing. Check out the album version on youtube. It has a better mix with less wailing.

Lennon and Clapton together at that show with Voorman and Allen White totally rocked.

Interesting to see nobody mentioning the similarity to Heartbreak Hotel. I think it’s the defining character of the song.
