Paul claims to have worked on it with him, but he even said He would have to give Lennon the credit, because it was John’s idea, lyric and music. John sings most of the song. Give it a listen.

Definitely a Lennon based song, but McCartney’s influence is all over it as well. I hear Orbison’s Pretty Woman in there too, but taken to the next level.

John must have had a hard time singing and playing that riff at the same time.

(Brian Eno makes a couple seconds of white noise, Phil Manzanera plays simple chords after soloing wildly through the rest of the song, etc.) When then-bassist Graham Simpson takes his turn, he plays the Day Tripper riff on the bass.

Both sides were listed on the local charts as a double-A, but “-tripper” was the one we herard most often. Must be a local thing – we’ve always liked our rock-n-roll!

One of their best!!!! It’s my 6 year old daughter’s favorite Beatles song, and I’m very happy she doesn’t know what the song is about. It’s obvious that Paul sang lead on the verses, but is it really John who played the solo? It doesn’t sound like him. His lead playing was usually more assertive, rhythmic, and dirty (not necessarily a bad thing by any means). George’s lead playing was usually cleaner, more melodic, and more note perfect. And in this case, I think the solo sounds more like George’s approach especially when the solo is so close to the way the riff sounds. Of course, if it is John, that’s totally fine. I wish they listed the credits for who played what for each song on each album in the liner notes when they first came out, like the Rolling Stones did for Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers and other artists did for their albums.

open strings when they can playing the riff, while Paul played it in an upper register,
having to fret all the notes, just a LITTLE more difficult.

Claims the band verbally beat up on him to get it included.

John sings harmony lead vocal ..If I give my heart to you…while Paul singing actual melody doesn’t sound like the lead….Lennon was the master at singing lead harmony vocals..another example; drive my car. John’s vocals so strong they could be lead. I think this is what made their vocals so unique, they could flip flop vocals on chorus and verses equally.

Sunday 3 July 2016,

I don’t think the riff of Day tripper was inspried by the riff of Pretty Woman
John Lennon was very much influenced by Smokey Robinson and had the record My girl in his personal juke-box
The start of the riff of Day tripper is almost exactly like the start of the riff of My girl

I believe it was. I vaguely remember my older brother talking about it after being at that show. Wish I could’ve gone but I was only 11 at the time.

Not sure what actually constitutes the lead in that scenario. Either it’s a great song.
